4th Of July

The 4th of July is one of the most commemorated holidays in America. A time to honor our freedom and independence and reflect upon those that serve and have served in our military branches. This is a time to celebrate what makes America great; and surely it is a time honored celebration in most homes across the United States. I enjoy the barbecues and parades, and love the evening time firework displays. I have gathered some historical tidbits for those that need to brush up on U.S history and simple party and entertainment ideas that will add to the fun factor when you celebrate your special 4th Of July this year.

4th Of July

For many there is something magical about this day. We fondly recall memories of family gatherings. The delicious smells of food on the grill, exciting parades and the anticipation of a glorious firework display. Involve the children with these two simple tips. Start out the day with a red, white and blue dress up. With simple streamers and balloons allow the kids to decorate. If your community offers a parade gather up the kids and attend, It will stir up your patriotic spirit.

4th Of July

Keep your menu simple. If guests are coming simplify further by having everyone bring 2-3 dishes. Burgers, hot-dogs, and BBq's. Shish-ke-bobs are a fun alternative. Then there are the trimmings, potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans.Offer up chips, beverages and of course the watermelon and this menu is complete.

This dessert is a tasty addition to any 4th of July Celebration or barbecue..

Fruit Pizza Flag

1- 15 ounce package sugar cookie mix

1- 8 ounce package low-fat cream cheese

2- tablespoons sour cream or yogurt

2- tablespoons powdered sugar

1- teaspoon grated lemon rind

1-tablespoon lemon juice

blueberries or blueberry pie filling for the blue field

strawberries or raspberries for the red stripes

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Prepare the cookie dough according to package directions. Lightly grease a rectangular cookie sheet. Press the dough about 1/8" thick onto the pan & decoratively crimp the edges. Bake 8-10 minutes or until the edges begin to brown. Cool on a rack.

Combine the cream cheese, sour cream or yogurt, powdered sugar, lemon rind, and lemon juice and spread over crust.

Arrange the fruit on top leaving the cream cheese layer exposed in the appropriate places for white stripes.

4th Of July

Consider some traditional ideas for your party entertainment. Play some patriotic tunes on your CD player to set the mood. A rousing game of croquet, sack races or three legged races will add to your fun. Consider hosting a mini parade and let the children decorate their bikes and trikes with balloons and streamers. Use those watermelons for a watermelon eating or seed spitting contest. Tidbits and Facts On The 4th of July

The 4th of July has more historical significance than any other day celebrated in this country.

One of the most important holidays that is observed in the United States. We celebrate the day the American colonies declared their independence from England on the 4th of July.

By the year 1774, escalating taxes had become increasingly frustrating for the American Colonists. Because they had no representation in England's Parliament, they had no voice. To quell the discontent King George III sent in the troops. For over a year Congress tried to solve the problem without a declaration of war, but during the spring of 1776, sentiment rapidly grew in favor of independence. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia introduced his famous resolution that " these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free & independent States." The Continental Congress appointed a committee of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman to draw up a formal declaration of independence.

Thomas Jefferson prepared the draft. The Declaration of Independence he wrote, set forth the position of the American Revolutionaries with moving eloquence, supported by strong legal argument. The committee and Congress approved the document with few changes. As Richard Lee said: " the Thing in its nature is so good that no cookery can spoil the dish for the palates of freemen."

On July 2nd the delegates of the colonies voted for independence.The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America was signed on July 4, 1776.

A new nation the United States of America had been born!!!

We adults as well as children can use the 4th of July holiday celebration to learn the significant historical reasons that we honor this holiday.
